Coming Home:
Redefining Citizen
As Citizen evolved from a growing agency into a specialized growth partner serving senior living communities across North America, its brand needed to evolve alongside it.
Through stakeholder interviews, audience research, strategic positioning, messaging development, and a complete visual identity refresh, I helped create a brand that reflects Citizen's unique combination of human-centred service, deep industry expertise, and measurable business impact.
The result was a comprehensive rebrand that aligned the organisation around a clearer vision, stronger market position, and a scalable foundation for future growth.
The challenge
Five years ago, Citizen entered the senior living industry as a scrappy, ambitious newcomer. Our expertise in websites and paid advertising helped us establish a foothold in the market, but over time those differentiators became table stakes.
The company had evolved, our team had grown, and our impact had expanded significantly, yet our brand no longer reflected who we had become.
The challenge wasn't simply to refresh a logo or update a website. It was to redefine Citizen's identity in a way that honoured its roots while positioning us for our next stage of growth.

The listening tour

Every strong brand starts by listening.
To better understand what made Citizen unique, I conducted a listening tour with team leads and members of the leadership team. Through interviews, workshops, and collaborative discussions, I looked for patterns, contradictions, and recurring themes in how people described the company, its culture, and its clients.
What emerged was remarkably consistent.
People spoke about genuine care for both clients and one another. They described a culture built around curiosity, expertise, and service. They talked about the responsibility of supporting seniors and their families through one of life's most important decisions.
They highlighted the close relationships we build with our clients, functioning as an extension of their teams rather than a traditional agency.
Again and again, one idea surfaced: Citizen's greatest strength wasn't a service offering. It was its people.
Defining the brand
The next step was translating those insights into a strategic framework that could guide the organisation for years to come.
One theme surfaced repeatedly throughout the process: Citizen's ability to balance human connection with measurable business outcomes.
That idea (and a Taylor Swift song) became the foundation for the company's new tagline:
Human Powered. Expert Results.
The tagline reflects both sides of Citizen's value proposition: a team that genuinely cares about its clients and the expertise required to deliver meaningful results.
To complement the tagline, we developed a brand promise focused on what matters most to clients.
Real Move-Ins. Real Relationships.
The promise reinforces Citizen's commitment to driving occupancy and growth while building trusted, long-term partnerships with the communities it serves.

Bringing the Brand to Life
Building a brand is only the beginning. The real challenge is implementation.
Working alongside an incredibly talented design team, we translated the strategy into a cohesive visual and verbal identity system. Every element was intentionally developed to reinforce the brand's positioning, from the shift to lowercase typography and simplified naming conventions to the colour palette, messaging frameworks, and visual hierarchy.
The goal was not simply consistency. It was creating a brand experience that felt unmistakably Citizen across every touchpoint.
To support adoption, I also helped develop internal training and rollout materials designed to empower employees to understand, embrace, and champion the new brand.
Rather than presenting the rebrand as something created for the team, we positioned it as something created with and by the team.
Creating a digital experience
As the lead content strategist for the new Citizen website, my role was to translate the brand strategy into a digital experience.
Working closely with the web team, I developed the content strategy, messaging architecture, and website copy while ensuring alignment with StoryBrand principles and conversion-focused best practices.
The website became an important validation point for the new positioning. It provided an opportunity to test the messaging, refine the narrative, and bring the Citizen story to life through a clear and consistent user experience.

Sharing the story behind the story
Rebrands are often viewed through the lens of visual design, but successful brand transformations rely on both strategic thinking and creative execution working together throughout the process.
In a Cup of Joe podcast interview with my intrepid brand co-creator and senior designer Kate Paton, we explored the thinking behind the Citizen rebrand, discussing the importance of research, strategic alignment, intentional design decisions, and the role of storytelling in creating brands that can stand the test of time.
The conversation reinforced a key belief that guided this project: every successful brand is built on purpose, not preference.
